Nothing New About Nail Care?

November 24th, 2011

Many people will likely be surprised to discover that the history of nail care can be traced back to Ancient Egypt. Historical writings tell of times where men and women reddened their nails using Henna. Believe it or not archeologists have found gold manicure tools which are over 3000 years old.

Techniques That Have Been Used to Keep Nails Healthy Throughout History

In lots of cultures, having long red nails were an indication of wealth and upper class status. This is because having well manicured nails indicated to others that this person wearing them didn’t have a job in hard labor. Throughout history women and men have used various techniques and tools to keep their nails strong and healthy. One of the most important elements of nail care is cuticle care. In the past people rubbed oils and creams into their cuticles. This prevented painful cuticles hanging off of the fingers. Today people can take advantage of modern creams designed especially for the cuticle area. During the 1930s, more and more women started to use nail polish. Using a few coats of nail polish protected the nails and kept them strong. False nails became popular during the 1960s. These too protected the nails from getting damaged. People have been performing manicures and pedicures on themselves for centuries. However nowadays some people prefer to go to a beauty salon to have someone take of their nail. Using lotion, nail files and polish keeps the nails strong and attractive.

How Modern Technology has Influenced Nail Care

As technology has advanced, so too has the quality of nail care tools and products. For instance in ancient times individuals used metal and glass to grind their nails down in order to prevent breakage. Today the modern nail file can do this job quickly and effectively. Previously women had to wait hours for their nails to dry. Currently they can opt for quick drying nail polishes. An alternative choice is to place the hands beneath a drying machine. These items would not be available without technology. Other nail care tools that have been improved over the years include foot baths, nail polish removers, clippers and polish thinners. Fake nails now appear more realistic because of the use of gel and acrylic.

Modern women and men should make an effort to care for their nails. Unattractive nails are something that could very well be improved with a little effort and time. Today the best nail salons offer manicures and pedicures at very reasonable prices. Going to a reputable hair salon has numerous benefits for consumers. Nail technicians will be able to file the nails down, apply healing creams and nail polish. Many of these salons also provide foot baths for people who are getting a pedicure. While a manicure and pedicure can be carried out at home, the final results are better when it’s performed by an experienced nail technician.
